The subjunctive preterit
虚拟式过去时用在下列结构中:
If I were you, I would talk to the manager. 如果我是你，我就会跟经理谈谈。
用来表达猜测，愿望，欲望(等)，其变位与简单过去时一样，除了动词to be:
使用虚拟式过去时的一般结构:
• 在if:
| I | were | (而不是was) | |

| He | were | (而不是was) | |
| We | were | ||
| You | were | ||
| They | were |
使用虚拟式过去时的一般结构:
• 在if:
If I were a rich man! 如果我是有钱人！
If I had more time, I would show you my office. 如果我有更多时间，我就会给你展示我的办公室了。(= If I'd more time, I'd show you my office.)

If she were my girlfriend, I would buy her roses every day.如果她是我的女朋友，我就会每天给她买玫瑰花。
• 在动词to wish之后，表达愿望或后悔:
I wish you were here. 我希望你能在这儿(实际你没来)。
Do you surf? - (No but) I wish I could. 你冲浪吗？ - (不，但是)我希望我能。
• 在would rather之后，表达一种偏好:
I'd rather you came another time. 我更愿你另外一个时间来。
Horatio would rather people didn't know about his test monkeys. 霍雷肖宁愿人们不知道他的试验猴子。
• 在it's time之后:
It's about time Willy retired.该到威利退休的时候了。
It's high time that you and I had a chat about it. 正是时候，该我们谈谈这件事了。
